SEMINAR OUTLINE
C.S.I. - HERMITAGE
Crime Scene Investigation for Challenging Canines
Saturday • October 4th
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

MYTH VS REALITY

In our increasingly urbanized surroundings and life styles, we have fewer and fewer opportunities to observe dogs being 'au natural'. More and more our perceptions are influenced by secondary sources such as the media. Advertising, T.V. shows and newspapers often present the two extremes of 'perfect' or 'psychopath' and we tend to screen this information through the distortion of our own likes and dislikes.

Currently, there is a prevalent belief that aggressive behaviour is bad/abnormal and that socialization will prevent such behaviour. ie a well-socialized dog is always friendly. Equating socialization with sociable is the pitfall since socialization refers only to interacting in social activities ... sociable means friendly. Well socialized people are not always friendly! Well socialized dogs are not always friendly! A better standard for well-socialized would refer to 'appropriate' social behaviour and the understanding that it is sometimes appropriate to deliver or to receive a reprimand for social infractions.

The idea of 'a good dog is a good dog' regardless of the circumstances is unrealistic and patently unfair. Would you expect 'a good person to be a good person' regardless of the circumstances. I think not! The reality is that humans and dogs react to a perceived threat in a variety of ways. Given the greater capacity for reason and abstract thought, you would think that humans would be better able to avoid and resolve conflict. Personally I think dogs do a much better job of resolving conflict than we do.

DEMONSTRATIONS WITH SELECTED DOGS

SETTING UP 'GROWL CLASSES'

  • Information will be provided on the areas of format, liability, equipment and training exercises

DETERMINING THE PROGRAM

The greater part of the day will be devoted to the assessment and demonstration of the training exercise for the dogs. If beneficial, the dogs will be used briefly on Day One to allow for audience observation of signs of stress and body language.

  • All participants will receive an outline of the dogs' histories. Discussions concerning the outline will allow for audience input in assisting owners in the setting of appropriate goals.
  • Selected dogs will be used to demonstrate the teaching of a variety of exercises designed to reduce arousal and inappropriate aggressive behaviour.
