SEMINAR PROGRAM
5.5 CEU's per day; 16.5 total

John believes that Canine Aggression is a course that picks up where other courses stop. He talks about dog to dog aggression, dog to people aggression, the causes, effects and solutions. This is not a course for beginners as the problems of aggression are covered in some depth. A good background in practical handling and training would be helpful prior to attending this course. Although designed as a stand alone course, it is ideally suited to those students who have experience in training and handling difficult dogs.

John provides unexpected and unique insights based on fundamental behavioral characterists often not fully appreciated until he casts them in a new light. He does this with an ongoing, almost electric, dialogue with attendees, that does not rely on, or need, even the slightest enhancement of audio / visual. His riveting descriptions, penetrating questions and singular chalk board diagrams have provided the tools for countless former attendees to really stretch out their own analytic capabilities.

DAYS 1 & 2: Causes & Assessments
Friday & Saturday • November 12th & 13th • 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

We examine the relationship that owners have with their dogs, defining what is meant by aggression as distinct from an aggressive display-- genetics, the role of the environment in development, breed traits and learning theories.

We look at dogs that are aggressive towards people: the reasons that this occurs, the categories of aggression and how we assess and measure behavior prior to and during a behavior program.

We then look at dogs that aggress towards other dogs and once again examine the reasons behind this behavior. Strategies for carrying out behavioral evaluations on dog/dog aggression are covered and also strategies for improving a dog's behavior.

FORMS OF AGGRESSION COVERED INCLUDE:

  • Food Aggression
  • Nervous Aggression Toward People
  • Dog Aggression On Lead
  • Dog Aggression Off Lead
  • Possession Aggression
  • Protective Aggression

Hours: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm each day with very brief breaks for am coffee or tea and pm soft drinks or water plus a short lunch period which will not provide enough time to go off premises.

DAY 3: Behavior Modification
Sunday • November 14th • 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

We look at programs used in reversing aggressive behavior and also look at spontaneous recovery, allellomimetic behavior, the effect of hormones on aggressive behavior and the reduction of aggression through control training.

Hours: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm with very brief breaks for am coffee or tea and pm soft drinks or water plus a short lunch period which will not provide enough time to go off premises.
